Three Unusual Things to Do in Myrtle Beach

Posted on

Myrtle Beach is well known for its golf courses, theme parks, boardwalk, and beaches. However, if you are willing to step off the path well trodden by the tourists that came before you, you can find a number of unique things to do in the city that will make your stay more memorable. Here are three unusual things you should consider doing when you vacation in Myrtle Beach.

Visit or Stay in a Haunted Hotel

Those who love a good ghost story can get their paranormal fix by visiting one of the allegedly haunted hotels in the area. From disembodied voices to strange sightings of long-dead people to moving objects, these hotels have had numerous reports of strange occurrences that would give anyone goose bumps.

Some properties have been around for a long time. With thousands of residents and visitors passing through, it seems one or two may have stuck around. For instance, one hotel—an antebellum rice plantation built in 1718—was investigated by a local ghost-hunting team who recorded disembodied voices saying "don't leave me."

However, some newer properties have also attracted their fair share of ghostly guests. One property had a guest check in who ended up staying permanently. The unfortunate man had a heart attack, but guests and staff members have reported seeing him wandering on site and causing mischief, such as making window shades open and close.

Even if you're not looking for evidence of life after death, many of the haunted hotels are tourist attractions in and of themselves. Spending the day touring these historical places can provide a nice glimpse into the history of South Carolina.

Take a Horseback Ride on the Beach

Most people who go to the beach want to participate in typical activities such as lying in the sun, playing volleyball, or swimming in the water. If you would rather do something a little different, then take a horseback ride on the beach.

In addition to beach rides, some facilities also take people on area tours on horseback and rent horses for individual use. Horse boarding may also be available, and it is a good option if you'll be bringing a few four-legged friends with you on vacation. While there are typically activities suitable for kids, some companies offer midnight or sunset rides on the beach for those looking for romantic outings.

For those who don't know the first thing about riding a horse, many companies that specialize in offering equestrian activities also provide riding lessons, so you can learn a skill while on vacation that you can enjoy partaking in when you return home.

Cuddle Up with Baby Big Cats

If you ever wanted to pet a tiger but didn't want to get too close to its murder paws, then a visit to a local animal-preservation facility may be the thing for you. These places care for a wide variety of animals, including monkeys, elephants, tigers, and cheetahs.

Preservation facilities are different from normal zoos in that visitors are sometimes allowed to interact with the animals. Touch the leathery hide of an elephant or indulge your fantasy of petting a tiger by handling the decidedly less deadly baby version. This is a great activity for families that provide numerous opportunities for kids to learn about animals in the wild.

Myrtle Beach has a number of great things you can do that will make your vacation unique and something to talk about with friends for years to come. For more information about these and other activities or to book a place to stay while you are in town, contact a local hotel.
